The fundraising initiative, Making Waves for Autism has raised over $110,000, since its launch in 2024 to help individuals with autism.
The fundraising initiative was started in the Okanagan by Kelowna resident Kim Inglis to honour the memory of her cousin Tyler. Tyler passed away unexpectedly in August 2023 and is survived by his son Ryder who is on the autism spectrum. Tyler was passionate about raising funds and awareness for autism.
Every dollar raised through Making Waves for Autism goes directly to Autism Canada, supporting and advocating for autistic individuals, their families, and caregivers. The program supported 56 families in 2025 and the demand for help increased significantly in 2026, with 134 applications requesting a total of $150,000 in funding.
The annual fundraising campaign is back throughout June with its “365 Challenge,” encouraging individuals or teams to complete a total distance of 365 kilometres by rowing, paddling, or taking part in other activities. Participants can also support the cause by walking, running, biking, volunteering, donating, or helping spread awareness.
The fundraiser also aims to make sports more inclusive for neurodivergent youth, with clubs that raise $2,500 or more receiving autism inclusion training from Autism Canada. A special event was held at Red Bird Brewing in Kelowna on June 12, where community members worked together to row 365 kilometres in one day.
