N.S. Facility Creating Jobs for Adults with Disabilities

A not-for-profit organization in Elmsdale, Nova Scotia, called Corridor Community Options, is providing employment and skill-building opportunities for adults with intellectual disabilities.

The organization runs three social enterprises to provide training and meaningful employment opportunities for adults with intellectual disabilities. The first is Rick’s Riches Thrift Store, which sells gently used clothing, furniture, and household items donated by the public. The second is Able Roots Café, formerly known as Hidden Treasures, which serves homemade breakfasts, lunches, and catering services while teaching participants culinary and customer service skills. The third is the wood shop, where about 50 people work to produce items such as kindling and washer toss games to sell. It provides hands-on manufacturing and production experience to the participants.

Corridor Community Options has served the communities of East Hants and beyond since opening in the 1970s. In December of 2025, the organization expanded its operations and moved into a new building at 201 Park Road in Elmsdale.

In addition to teaching important skills through various job placements, the organization also helps participants work on their resumes so they can apply for opportunities within the community. The jobs offered through the organization have taught many important skills to people with intellectual disabilities and have helped them live with confidence and independence.
