The hockey community in Nova Scotia recently came together to help and support three minor hockey teams after they arrived in Nova Scotia for a hockey tournament without their gear.
The arenas at Cole Harbour Place recently hosted the Joe Lamontagne Memorial Hockey Tournament during March break. The same arenas are famous for developing NHL stars like Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon. Three teams from Newfoundland and Labrador arrived at Halifax Stanfield International Airport to participate in the tournament, only to discover that their hockey gear had been left behind.
When the tournament organizers, including Jeff McPhee, reached out on social media for the community’s help, the community in Nova Scotia quickly stepped in, and the response was incredible. Within hours, people donated so much equipment that a room at the rink was filled with everything the players needed, allowing the kids to get on the ice and enjoy the tournament after all.
The community donated enough equipment to outfit 20 to 25 kids so the teams could play. Coach Steve Barnes said the support from local people and businesses was overwhelming, with strangers eager to help create a special moment for the players.
