North End Connect Inc. is an Indigenous-led nonprofit that promotes digital equity and inclusion in Winnipeg by providing free refurbished desktops, free digital skills classes to enhance digital literacy, and eventually free or low-cost internet to residents.
North End Connect helps people who have no access to accounts, information, or resources; no way to apply for jobs or connect with friends and family; and no digital skills to accomplish tasks that require technology. NEC is working towards closing the digital gap by tackling key barriers, especially cost. The organization provides refurbished computers and helps people access affordable internet while also addressing challenges like transportation.
North End Connect Inc. also trains people to use online services safely, so more people can connect, learn, and succeed in today’s digital world. NEC supports reconciliation by creating opportunities that respect Indigenous knowledge and culture.
North End Connect Inc. started as a research project after community members asked for help improving access to technology. Today, it has grown into a small team with full-time staff, students, and volunteers and continues to welcome volunteers. The organization works closely with local partners like Community Helpers Unite to support residents in Winnipeg’s North End.
