Community Group Donates 176,000 Lbs of Groceries in Calgary

A community group in Calgary gave away 80,000 pounds of free potatoes last month to help residents amidst rising grocery prices. Guru Nanak Free Kitchen Calgary provided about 176,000 pounds of mixed groceries and potatoes delivered by four semi-trucks.

About 30 volunteers helped set up the large food donation drive at the McKnight-Westwinds CTrain Station on Saturday, April 25, starting at 1 p.m. The giveaway aimed to support families by providing fresh food at no cost. The group has been supporting over 10,000 families each month and has been helping communities in Calgary and Regina for the past nine years.

The large potato giveaway was popularly celebrated as “Potatoes Saturday,” as organizers distributed 80,000 pounds of fresh, unwashed potatoes to local residents. The event was made possible due to a generous donation from Pritam Transport.
