A longtime tradition once again brought together the Manitoba community of Beausejour for meat bingo on Louis Riel Day.
Over 100 residents gathered to play bingo and compete for a chance to win prizes like beef steaks and pork chops at the Beausejour Legion on Louis Riel Day. The fun community event dates back to the Second World War and has continued to bring people together.
For over a decade, the Beausejour Legion has hosted monthly meat bingo events, giving away beef, pork, and chicken. Beausejour Mayor Ray Schirle said the events are very popular, drawing big crowds who enjoy trying to win some meat. The last meat bingo on Feb. 16, 2026, was part of the town’s winter festival for Louis Riel Day.
Meat raffles have been a tradition since the Second World War, when food was rationed. Former Legion president Rick Pearse said they are still popular today because groceries, especially meat, are expensive. People enjoy supporting the Legion while also having a chance to take home some fresh meat.
