A volunteer group named Ladies of Sandwich has been making thousands of meals for Montreal’s shelters and missions.
The “Ladies of Sandwich” (often referred to as the Sandwich Sisters) are a dedicated group of volunteers based in Montreal, Canada, who gather every Monday morning at the Greene Centre to make hundreds of sandwiches for people struggling with food insecurity. The volunteers prepare different kinds of sandwiches, such as peanut butter and jelly or egg salad, which may become someone’s only meal of the day.
The volunteer group aims to provide nourishment and compassion to individuals experiencing homelessness, unemployment, or food insecurity. Since its inception three years ago, the group has prepared roughly 12,000 sandwiches annually to feed those in need.
Ladies of Sandwich has also partnered with groups like Bread and Beyond and support organizations including the NDG Depot and Union United Church to help address food insecurity in the region. In addition to feeding people in need, the group fosters friendship, teamwork, and a strong sense of community.
The group is known for its warm, “motherly love” atmosphere and aims to build community and spark joy, starting each week by helping people facing food insecurity. Beyond making sandwiches, the group also collects toiletries and winter clothing and hosts bake sales.
