In a fight to prevent local crime, the residents of the Southdale neighbourhood in Winnipeg are working together to set up their own community patrol. The community patrol will feature residents of the community watching the streets to help prevent crime and keep the area safer.
The Southdale community has already begun work to start a Citizens on Patrol team and is looking for volunteers. The volunteers will be given training to walk around the neighbourhood, watch for suspicious activity, and report it to help prevent crime. The head of the Southdale Residents Group, Kevin Dickson, shared that the idea to set up a community patrol originated from the community Facebook page, where residents share local crime updates. Most of the crime reported in the area is minor, like car break-ins.
Dickson believes that having people out on the streets will make the area feel more secure and might stop some crimes from happening. All volunteers are required to go through a mandatory criminal record check before joining, and the group made it clear they won’t allow anyone to take the law into their own hands.
You can find more information about the group on the Southdale Crime Watch and Patrol Facebook page.
