Well Suited Community Closet Gives Professional Clothing to McMaster Students

The Well-Suited Community Closet, led by students in SUSTAIN 3S0S at McMaster University, is a student-driven initiative that provides professional clothing to McMaster students at no cost. The project was created to reduce financial barriers and promote greater equity in career readiness, offering students the resources they need to feel confident in academic and career settings.

During the donation period, which finished last week, members of the McMaster community contributed a wide range of items, including suits, blazers, dress shirts, blouses, dress pants, skirts, dresses, shoes, ties, belts, spare hangers and garment racks. These contributions now form a shared resource that students can borrow whenever they need professional attire.

Denya Medeiros from the SUSTAIN 3S03 team explained that the initiative was designed to create an inclusive space that supports students as they pursue their academic and professional goals. At the same time, the project promotes sustainability. Team member Lena Lagenreither highlighted that the fashion industry generates significant textile waste each year, and giving clothing a second life through the Well-Suited Community Closet helps reduce that impact while supporting students.

Although the initiative officially ended this past Friday, individuals wishing to support the project beyond the donation period are encouraged to contact Crystal Mills, head of Access Services in McMaster University Libraries and SUSTAIN Community Project Champion.
