Even though food prices have increased and more people need assistance, LUSH Valley Food Action Society has been able to continue its important work because the community has stepped up.
Over the past year, with support from donors, volunteers, and local partners, the Courtenay, British Columbia-based nonprofit has prepared more than 7,500 hot meals, supported 40 local farmers, delivered over 7,000 Good Food Boxes (with more than half offered at low or no cost), taught food skills to nearly 700 people, provided more than 25,000 school lunches, and rescued 22,500 pounds of surplus fruits and vegetables from local farms and backyards. Their work demonstrates how much a community can accomplish when everyone helps each other.
LUSH Valley’s goal is to build a community where everyone has access to healthy food and where the local food system is strong and resilient. Donations to LUSH help fund many essential programs, including hot meals, Good Food Boxes, food skills classes, fruit and farm gleaning, community gardens, and advocacy efforts that support local farmers and strengthen the regional food supply.
