Southern Alberta family donates $1,000,000 towards Cardiac Healthcare

A family in Southern Alberta has anonymously donated one million dollars to the Chinook Regional Hospital Foundation (CRHF) and the Cardiac Sciences Advisory Cabinet to build the proposed Cardiac Centre of Excellence in the region.

The proposed Cardiac Centre of Excellence will help substantially improve the standard of cardiac health care at the two southern Alberta regional hospitals located in Lethbridge and Medicine Hat. The proposed improvements include adding new labs for heart procedures, special heart imaging rooms, and more ICU beds for heart patients. It will help reduce the strain on existing ICU wards and offer better, faster care for people with heart problems.

According to officials, heart disease is the leading cause of death in southern Alberta, with 15.5% more heart attacks and 26.6% higher death rates than in other parts of the province. The foundation started a fundraising campaign in September 2024 and aims to raise $30 million by February 2027.
