35-year-old Justin Simporios from Surrey, BC, made history by becoming the winner of the largest single lottery prize in Canadian history, $80 million. Simporios plans to use part of his winnings to help his family and others in need.
On May 9, Simporios picked all seven winning numbers in the Lotto Max draw, winning $80 million, the biggest single lottery prize ever claimed in Canada. Simporios bought his lottery ticket the same day as the draw while shopping for buns to make burgers for dinner. Upon learning that the winning ticket was sold in Surrey, he joked to his wife about being millionaires. Upon discovering that he had actually won the $80 million jackpot, he shouted, cried, and told his wife that they don’t have to work anymore.
After winning the jackpot, Simporios was brought in front of the media, where he shared that he quit his job at a logistics company just a few hours before the news conference. Simporios wants to use the money to take care of his family, to help his mom and his wife’s family. He also wants to give back to the community because he understands how tough life can be for many families. Justin has a few charities in mind to support.
Simporios shared a few dreams for himself too, including wanting to watch basketball player LeBron James play in person before he retires. He wants to buy his dream house in Vancouver and hopes to visit family in the Philippines. Upon receiving the big $80 million cheque, he got emotional. Simporios is an immigrant who has worked hard to support his family while trying to spend time with them. With the jackpot money, he is excited to enjoy more moments with his daughter, wife, and loved ones.
