NL Lawyers Offer Pro Bono program to help wildfire victims

Two lawyers from Newfoundland and Labrador, Devin Drover and Judy Manning, launched their pro bono program last week to help wildfire victims in Conception Bay North.

The wildfires in Newfoundland and Labrador have destroyed nearly 200 structures. As part of their program, both Devin Drover and Judy Manning will assist with wildfire-related legal issues, such as reviewing insurance policies, filing claims, navigating government relief programs, and providing advice on tenancy or employment issues.

Drover serves as Atlantic director and general counsel of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation and has previously offered similar support for victims of Hurricane Fiona in 2022. Drover, who grew up in the area, says his family and friends have been affected. To help, he and another lawyer, Manning, launched a free legal support program for people dealing with fire-related claims. They can be reached by email at wildfires@legalhelpnl.ca

and will work with people online, by phone, or in person.

Natural Resources Canada says Newfoundland and Labrador has already had 220 wildfires in 2025, more than double the average of 85 per year. The largest, the Kingston fire in Conception Bay North, has burned over 10,000 hectares since it started on Aug. 3. Drover says pro bono work is vital in times like this so people aren’t left without legal help because of cost. He hopes the program will give comfort and certainty to those who are scared and uncertain about the future.
