Southeast Cancer Support Services (SCSS) is a registered charitable organization dedicated to easing the unique challenges faced by cancer patients residing in Southeastern Manitoba’s rural regions.
Southeast Cancer Support Services (SCSS) supports patients and families affected by cancer by offering services such as transportation, parking, and accommodations for treatment, as well as financial aid for extra costs along the way. The organization also provides education, information, and resources on cancer for individuals and groups.
SCSS offers wellness programs like Kids With Courage and Mindful Movement, along with prevention and screening services such as skin checks, lymphedema treatments, and radon testing. It also provides palliative care, wigs, and head coverings to support people through their cancer journey. “It’s for anybody who’s on their cancer journey and needs some sort of support,” says Heather Jowett, board chair of SCSS.
As a featured charity at the recent KPMG Taste of Summer Charity BBQ, SCSS received donations that will mostly go toward covering transportation costs. Since the start of this year, SCSS has logged over 40,000 km of travel and spent more than $4,000 on parking, with half of the driving done by volunteers.
