A fund created to honour the life of Douglas Guthrie is providing $120,000 to two community programs that will help adults with disabilities and mental health services in the Oakville and Halton Regions.
The Douglas Guthrie Legacy Fund will contribute $60,000 each to two local initiatives: Community Living Oakville’s respite program, and the Hangout and Distress Centre Halton’s TeleCheck program. The donation will help both organizations offer meaningful support by fostering connection, personal growth, and a sense of safety.
Guthrie, who passed away in February 2024 at the age of 85, was the founder of the town’s longest-running outdoor farmers’ market and a long-time member of the Civitan Club of Oakville. Guthrie was known for his dedication to serving the community, which he called his loved ones. A year after his passing, his family and the Civitan Club of Oakville are honouring his legacy by establishing the Douglas Guthrie Legacy Fund.
Community Living Oakville is using the funds to launch a free program that offers adults with developmental disabilities a space to connect with others. The program aims to reduce isolation and foster friendships.
Distress Centre Halton will use its $60,000 to expand the TeleCheck program, which helps post-secondary students in the Halton Region who need immediate support.
The Douglas Guthrie Legacy Fund continues Guthrie’s lifelong commitment to community service by offering vital support to those who need it most.
