“Buy-Canadian” Post Helps Save A Small Local Business in Ontario

A Reddit post made by a business owner’s daughter asking for support went viral and has helped save the 38-year-old Canadian business.

Shenul Williams has run Aki’s Fine Foods in Pickering, Ontario, for 38 years, making Indo-African condiments, sauces, and chutneys. But with new U.S. tariffs driving up ingredient costs, she feared she might have to shut down. Her daughter shared their concerns and asked for support on Reddit. The post went viral, sparking an outpouring of support from Canadians across provinces. The business has not only managed to stay afloat but is receiving more orders than ever before.

The ongoing trade conflict with the U.S. has increased feelings of patriotism and support for Canadian businesses and products. Aliza Welch, the daughter of Williams, sought help on Reddit by posting in the r/buycanadian subreddit. The post received nearly two million impressions, along with thousands of shares and comments, resulting in hundreds of new customers across the country.

Aki’s Fine Foods, which usually sells through big stores like Loblaws and No Frills, has seen a huge spike in online orders, going up 6,000% along with overwhelming emails and phone calls of support. Williams has thanked customers across Canada, saying their support helps them keep doing what they love.
