Multi Grouse Grind Challenge raises over $26,000 for North Shore Rescue

On June 20, a record 92 participants spent 19 hours on the Grouse Grind, raising over $26,000 for North Shore Rescue, with more donations still coming in. Starting at 4 am and finishing after 10 pm, the participants collectively completed a record 915 Grouse Grinds. This sanctioned event, which determines the record-holder for most Grouse Grinds in a day, saw 92 athletes participating and raising valuable funds for North Shore Rescue.

The Grouse Grind® is a challenging 2.5-kilometre trail up Grouse Mountain, known for its steep ascent and total of 2,830 stairs. It gains 800 metres in elevation from a base of 290 metres to a summit of 1,090 metres. The average time to complete the hike is 2 to 2.5 hours.

James Stewart from Vancouver, BC, was the overall winner, completing 19 Grouse Grinds in 15:24:10. Green Sean from Kelowna, BC, stood second with 18 Grouse Grinds in 14:29:03. The top female finisher was Fion Chen from Burnaby, BC, who completed 16 ascents in 13:31:01, placing sixth overall.

“We are thrilled to see participants take on the most challenging and unique athletic event on the North Shore,” said Madelaine Twomey, Grouse Mountain Resort Communications Manager. “All the athletes should be incredibly proud of their accomplishments and the valuable funds they raised for North Shore Rescue, which has exceeded $26,000.”

Established in 1965, North Shore Rescue is a volunteer search and rescue team providing 24/7, year-round life-saving services. The team has about 50 volunteers skilled in mountain, canyon, and urban search and rescue operations, all committed to serving the community.

“North Shore Rescue is extremely grateful to Grouse Mountain for choosing NSR as the charity beneficiary of this race,” said Scott Merriman, North Shore Rescue Team Leader. “We are excited about this partnership and look forward to other events this summer too. This support will help us buy life-saving equipment and provide essential training for our members.”

The Multi Grouse Grind Challenge is the second event in Grouse Mountain’s Summer Race Series, which began with Seek the Peak on June 8 and will end with the Grouse Grind Mountain Run on August 24.
