A group of eight hunters donated about 1,300 pounds of moose meat to help feed people in need through the Prince Albert Grand Council.

The group brought back the meat from a hunting trip in January near Porcupine Plain, and it was delivered to Relatives’ Lodge, the 24-hour emergency shelter operated by the Prince Albert Grand Council at the Prince Albert Exhibition Centre. The shelter’s 35 beds are full every night, and it serves three meals a day to adults experiencing homelessness in Prince Albert and nearby areas. The donation will help provide warm meals to vulnerable members of the community.

The 1,300 pounds of moose meat were prepared into stew meat, roasts, and hamburger, making it easier to stretch into many meals and feed people for months. For the hunters, the donation is not only about providing food but also about sharing traditional food, supporting the community, and helping with the rising cost of meat. The hunt also tied into a broader conversation about First Nations communities’ ability to harvest and share traditional foods.
