Edmonton Non-Profit Helps Underprivileged Find Meaningful Careers

Skillcity Institute is an Edmonton-based non-profit founded in 2015 that helps people from underrepresented and under-resourced communities build meaningful careers.

The organization supports children, youth, and adults by offering programs that develop job skills, encourage entrepreneurship, and promote lifelong learning. The nonprofit works closely with social service agencies, community partners, schools, and businesses to create real pathways to employment and economic growth.

Skillcity offers personalized support to help people succeed, and its hands-on career education model is designed to give everyone a fair chance to reach their full potential. Skillcity’s institute is located at the Clareview Recreation Centre in northeast Edmonton, which is home to many racialized and immigrant families.

Over the past decade, Skillcity has steered thousands of participants away from low-level positions toward career paths offering higher earnings and growth potential. The program helps participants update their skills in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), with access to 3D printers and VR goggles. Skillcity CEO Funke Smith says her organization has served more than 6,000 youth and newcomers over the past decade.
