Safe Families Branford is Helping Families in Need

Safe Families is a community nonprofit that helps families in need through care, support, and practical assistance. The Brantford Chapter, started in January 2022 and led by Christine Schmidt and her team, has been working hard to support families facing various challenges.

The organization raises money through events such as indoor golf tournaments and community run/walk fundraisers. The Circle of Support helps families deal with problems before they become serious crises. Volunteers offer time, care, and encouragement to parents to help them manage difficult situations so they can continue raising their children at home, preventing children from entering the child welfare system.

There are now about 16 chapters across the country. The organization’s Circle of Support model places the family in crisis at the center, surrounded by volunteers who offer emotional, practical, and temporary care. These include host families who provide short-term housing for children, family friends who offer companionship, coaches who help parents set goals, and resource friends who provide meals or assist with small repairs. The network helps families stay together and reduces the risk of abuse or neglect.

The Brantford chapter of Safe Families has made a significant impact in the community, and nearby areas such as Haldimand are now interested in starting their own chapters. The organization also offers trauma training for its volunteers and anyone who needs it, ensuring families receive compassionate and informed support.
