Vernon’s Ducks for Dogs Race Supports Local Children with Autism

The Vernon Lions Club is hosting its Ducks for Dogs race fundraiser on Saturday, June 27. Every duck sale helps support a service dog for a local child with autism.

The Vernon Lions Club’s Ducks for Dogs fundraiser helps raise money to provide a specially trained service dog for a local child with autism through BC & Alberta Guide Dogs. For many children with autism, a service dog helps provide comfort, improve sleep, build confidence, increase independence, and help them feel safer every day.

The president of the Vernon Lions Club, Brian Barnett, shared that it costs about $35,000 to raise and train a service dog, which puts it out of reach for many families who need one most. The Vernon Lions Club supports local people and causes that often do not get enough attention. The club aimed to sell 4,000 rubber ducks for the race through ticket sales.

The final duck race is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Dutch’s Campground in Coldstream on June 27. The owners of the first three ducks to win the race will receive cash prizes of $1,000 for the first, $500 for the second, and $250 for the third. Even the owner of the last duck to cross the finish line will get $100.

The community event is free and open to all, as it will feature games, exhibits, and a hot dog barbecue. All proceeds will go toward the fundraiser.
