Vernon’s Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services volunteers have been visiting neighbourhoods to make sure that local vulnerable residents are staying cool and hydrated during the current heat wave.

The Vernon Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) team is on the move, providing bottled water, juice, and nutritious snacks to help vulnerable individuals manage during the current heat wave.

The volunteers reach between 30 and 50 people in the community who are at increased risk of dehydration and heat-related illness. The organization’s outreach effort focuses on offering hydration and basic nutrition to those experiencing homelessness, housing insecurity, and other vulnerable individuals during the extreme weather.

During their outreach, the volunteers also provide individuals with information about local community programs and support services that can provide additional help. Organizers say their goal is to treat everyone with compassion, dignity, and respect while offering practical assistance to help keep people safe during hot weather.

The Salvation Army reminds everyone to take precautions during hot weather by drinking plenty of water, seeking shade, checking on neighbours and loved ones, and watching for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
