A former RCMP investigator and correctional officer, Steven Guérard, is running across Canada for four months to highlight the importance of fighting climate change.
On June 1, Guérard started his run from Sherbrooke City Hall in Quebec and plans to cover 40 to 60 kilometres a day to reach Vancouver in under four months. Last year, Guérard ran 1,092 kilometres to reach the western edge of Ontario from Quebec.
Having worked at a correctional facility in Sept-Îles and later with the RCMP, Guérard founded the non-profit project Environment Beyond Borders (Environnement Sans Frontières) to reconnect with nature. He is currently running about a marathon and a half every day with a backpack and a tent, without any dedicated support crew.
Parks Canada will help facilitate campsite access along his route, and Guérard holds a free discovery pass for federal parks. He is still seeking hotel and hospitality sponsors for overnight accommodations when camping is not practical.
The core message from his initiative is about experiencing the changing climate directly by getting out and doing something about climate change. On Jan. 1, 2026, Guérard completed 14 hours of pedalling in -26°C as part of a symbolic 24-hour outdoor spinning challenge to illustrate the “invisible sacrifice” required to fight climate change.
