The Rucksack March for Remembrance is bringing together communities across Canada with the aim of raising awareness and funds for Canadian military members, veterans, first responders, and their families facing service-related illness, injury, and mental health challenges.
The recent event in Edmonton marked the 10th Rucksack March for Remembrance and saw about 200 participants carrying 20 kilograms outdoors in support of Wounded Warriors Canada.
The annual event acknowledges and honours the emotional struggles faced by first responders, military members, and their families, especially following the deadly fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright that killed four soldiers and injured dozens more.
Rucksack for Remembrance brings people together to support those carrying the emotional weight of difficult experiences. Edmonton Fire Rescue Chief David Lazenby reminded participants that first responders also need help and should never feel ashamed to speak up when they are struggling.
Organizers from Wounded Warriors Canada believe it takes time to understand what support people need after a tragedy, and their organization is working toward filling the gaps. The national initiative is a reminder that everyone experiences trauma differently and deserves care, understanding, and support.
