The rural community of Mount Stewart on Prince Edward Island is coming together over two free mocktail nights to help residents socialize without alcohol.
The events are scheduled to take place at the Mount Stewart Community Complex, where participants will learn to make tasty non-alcoholic drinks while meeting and connecting with others. The idea came from hearing that residents wanted more ways to spend time together without alcohol. Organizer Katharine MacDonald said some people avoid alcohol for religious or health reasons, while others simply want to try something different.
The mocktail nights reflect a wider trend, as Canadians are drinking less alcohol than ever before. The community in Mount Stewart hopes these mocktail nights will give everyone a fun and welcoming way to enjoy time with friends and neighbours without alcohol.
The mocktail nights allow residents to work in groups as they learn to make different drinks and techniques such as shaking, stirring, and choosing the right ice and glasses. The participants also get to sample non-alcoholic beer, wine, and spirits. The next event is scheduled for Nov. 6 at the Mount Stewart Community Complex.
