“Old guy with a ruler” becomes unlikely snowfall hero in Newfoundland

62-year-old retiree Lloyd Leaman has become popular by keeping the eastern Newfoundland and Labrador community informed about the record-breaking snowfall since January.

The 62-year-old has become a trusted source for snowfall updates during this record-breaking winter in eastern Newfoundland. He has been carefully measuring the snow in his backyard in Paradise with his set of rulers and sharing the results on social media since January 2024. Leaman jokes that he never expected an “old guy with a ruler” to get media attention, but his detailed records are often cited by meteorologists at Environment Canada.

Lloyd Leaman takes his snowfall tracking seriously and starts early in the morning to share updates. During the last major storm, he posted his first measurement just after 5:30 a.m. on Bluesky and X and continued giving updates almost every hour until 9:30 p.m., when he recorded an impressive total of 79.5 cm.

Leaman’s followers often thank him for his hard work. He uses a 30 cm ruler for smaller storms and a yardstick-style ruler for big storms, replacing them after the markings wear off. His results are sometimes compared with another nearby volunteer, and he’s happy when their numbers match.

Leaman is excited to see so much snow this winter and to feel like he is part of something important by tracking it. He says paying attention to the weather is simply part of who he is as someone who grew up in Newfoundland and Labrador.
