After three years of living on the streets of Hope, B.C., the community helped Luke Corbeil get the treatment he needed and reunite with his mother in Quebec.
Luke Grenier Corbeil struggled with addiction and relied on the kindness of local community members in Hope to get by. His mother, France Grenier, who lived more than 4,000 kilometres away in Quebec, worried about her son’s safety and whereabouts. One day, France saw a photo of Luke’s dog alone on a community Facebook page, and she feared something had happened to Luke. She reached out to people in the community to search for Luke.
The support of compassionate people in the Fraser Valley helped find Luke, and he was sent for rehabilitation treatment in Abbotsford. France Grenier says her son’s recovery was possible because so many people in Hope and the Fraser Valley refused to give up on him. Community members, outreach workers, health-care professionals, volunteers, and addiction support teams treated Luke Grenier Corbeil with kindness, compassion, and respect, seeing the person behind the struggles.
Luke received treatment and support in Abbotsford and was reunited with his mother after completing his recovery program. Luke’s mother was deeply grateful to everyone who helped her son. The kindness of all those involved in changing her son’s life reminded her that recovery is possible when a caring community comes together to support someone through their most difficult times. The family returned to Quebec with Luke’s dog, where Grenier said the road to recovery will continue.
