Thirty-six cyclists rode over 300 kilometres through the Rockies over three days from Aug. 14 to 16 and helped raise nearly $450,000 to support affordable homeownership.
Since 2013, the initiative has raised over $2.5 million to help families turn their dream of homeownership into reality. This was the second consecutive year cyclists rolled into Pincher Creek, tackling challenging terrain and riding through rain. Popularly known as the Ride Through the Rockies, the initiative brought the community together to raise money for Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta.
The event was started by Ken Crockett, vice-president of Star Building Materials, with the intention of bringing people from the building and home construction industry together to raise money for Habitat for Humanity. The idea was inspired by a similar cycling fundraiser in Winnipeg.
The event started with just 13 cyclists in its first year and has now grown to 36 riders from Alberta, British Columbia, and Manitoba. Each rider aims to raise at least $2,500 through donations from friends, family, and their communities. Over the years, the event has created a strong community of people who believe that working together can help build better communities and brighter futures.
Pincher Creek was chosen again for the Ride Through the Rockies because of its beautiful scenery, challenging cycling routes, and strong community support. The $449,167 raised through the event will help support housing projects in Chestermere, where 24 homes are currently being built and another 17 are expected to start later this year. Since 1990, Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta has partnered with more than 400 families, helping more than 1,200 children. Those who wish to contribute can donate online by clicking here.
