Community Takes Charge to Keep Collingwood Clean

The community is getting together again at Harbourview Park in Collingwood, on April 25 as part of a Canadian campaign to pick up 1.5 million cigarette butts.

A group of volunteers from Keep Collingwood Clean is calling on residents to join the local Butt Blitz as part of a nationwide campaign to pick up 1.5 million cigarette butts. Keep Collingwood Clean is partnering with Unsmoke Canada for the campaign and inviting all residents to join.

Keep Collingwood Clean is a group of like-minded volunteers that pick up litter off the streets of Collingwood and Wasaga Beach. The volunteers have gathered hundreds of thousands of butts annually to be sent to TerraCycle Canada for recycling into products like plastic lumber. The group also won an award last year for the volunteers’ work to clean up cigarette butts in town.

Since 2021, the group has collected 3.7 million butts and sent them to TerraCycle for recycling. TerraCycle shared that Keep Collingwood Clean was its all-time number one recycler of cigarette butts in the TerraCycle Unsmoke cigarette recycling program across Canada.
