Winnipeg Community Centre Creates a Free Skate Lending Library

The Assiniboia West Recreation Association (AWRA) in Winnipeg is collecting skates for a new lending library to help more kids and families enjoy the ice this winter.

AWRA operates two locations in the Crestview area and is calling on the community for support, asking residents to donate gently used skates or helmets. The goal is to help more families take part in skating without the financial burden of buying new equipment.

AWRA’s Skate Lending Library, launching this winter, aims to make skating fun and accessible for everyone. “We often see people standing by the rink watching others skate because they don’t have skates,” said Courtney Czezowski, president of AWRA. “Many are new to the area or to Canada and don’t want to spend money on skates until they know they’ll use them.” The group is also collecting helmets to keep new skaters safe, welcoming even bike helmets for kids and families to try on.

AWRA’s mission is to create inclusive spaces and offer programs that encourage participation for all. Anyone interested in donating skates or helmets can drop them off at 861 Buchanan Blvd or 305 Morgan Cres and email info@awra.ca for more information.
