Teen Spearheads Community-wide Cleanup in Tecumseh, Ontario

Teen Spearheads Community-wide Cleanup in Tecumseh, Ontario
17-year-old Maude Drake (CBC)

17-year-old Maude Drake spearheaded a community-wide cleanup in Tecumseh, Ontario, on April 19. As a school project, the teen put together a proposal for a town cleanup, which inspired her community to come together for the project.

The cleanup event was conducted by the Optimist Club of St. Clair Beach, the Rotary Club of Windsor Roseland, and the Tecumseh Business Improvement Association. A Grade 12 student at St. Anne Catholic High School, Drake is passionate about the environment, and her commitment to making a difference is truly inspiring.

Drake’s proposal resulted in the very first community-wide cleanup in the southwestern Ontario town of Tecumseh. The community came together as volunteers fanning out with garbage bags along Tecumseh Road and Manning Road, collecting litter to help make the community cleaner and greener.

Drake believes environmental issues are often ignored. She says young people will be most affected because of environmental issues, so it’s important to make environmental protection a priority in communities.
