Several youths are actively participating in the Nunavut Youth Ambassador program in the Kivalliq region. Each year, the program selects ambassadors to represent the territory at major games.
The Nunavut Youth Ambassador Program helps young people by offering training, volunteer opportunities, and chances to take part in community projects and national events. To join, participants must live in Nunavut and be available to travel for training and events. The Recreation North program engages youth aged 16 to 21 to develop leadership skills and positively impact their communities through sport and recreation, helping them become community leaders. The participants attend the youth summit in Iqaluit, where they gain skills to identify local needs and create programs to meet them.
Youth can apply for any of the 12 courses offered by Recreation North, and those selected get to go with Team Nunavut to the major games. Last year, program members represented the region at the Arctic Winter Games in Alaska. This year, it will be the Canada Summer Games in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Last year, the program sent 12 kids in the Youth Ambassador program to the summit.
