Sonja Jahn has been named Prince Albert’s 2024 Citizen of the Year for her dedicated voluntary service towards bettering Prince Albert for both current residents and newcomers. Earlier in November 2022, Jahn received the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal.
Sonja Jahn was recently informed about her winning the prestigious award by representatives from the Prince Albert Kinsmen Club and Prince Albert Daily Herald during a surprise event. Jahn says she was shocked and extremely humbled upon learning about her achievement.
About 4.5 years ago, Jahn retired from her position as Director of Volunteer Services and Transition Lead at the Saskatchewan Health Authority, where she dedicated 20 years of her life. Jahn has also served on many boards and committees and is active in the Ukrainian Veselka group, its choir, Calvary United Church, and as a Red Cross volunteer recruiter. In April 2022, Jahn led an initiative to bring Ukrainian refugees to Prince Albert, a cause close to her heart. Jahn believes her greatest award was to see the refugees settle, succeed, and contribute their skills to the community.
Jahn was born and raised in Prince Albert and credits her inspiration to many people in her life, including her parents, who strongly believed in giving back to the community. Past inductees of the Prince Albert’s Citizen of the Year award include Malcolm Jenkins, Barry Brezden, Marj Bodnarchuk, and Marie Mathers. A formal banquet and award ceremony will take place at a later date.
