The Steinbach unit of the national supermarket chain Sobeys recently raised and donated over $10,500 to local food banks while helping shoppers identify and choose Canadian-made products.
Sobeys’ Season of Giving Campaign helped the Steinbach store collect funds for South East Helping Hands, and the Ste. Anne Food Bank. The supermarket also introduced a new way for customers to spot Canadian-made goods using tags marked with a Canadian flag.
Store owner and operator Lee Kotowicz credited customers for their generosity during the campaign. Staff members also played a key role by promoting “match weekends,” during which the store doubled every dollar raised.
Sobeys Steinbach has a history of supporting the community through donations to South East Helping Hands, the region’s largest food bank. The Ste. Anne Food Bank also works with the store regularly to supply food to its clients.
The introduction of Canadian flag tags to label products made in Canada is making it easier for shoppers to identify local and national items. The initiative reflects a growing need for transparency in product sourcing and a shift in customers towards buying local and supporting Canadian businesses.
