Seniors grocery shuttle in northeast Winnipeg receives renewed support

A special bus service helping northeast Winnipeg seniors reach grocery stores will continue, supported by local councillors and MLAs. The grocery access program offers residents from five seniors living centres a low cost $6 round trip to McIvor Mall, giving them an hour to shop. Many supermarkets are located far from seniors housing, making regular shopping difficult for those without vehicles or with mobility challenges.

The program began last October as a pilot led by MLA Rachelle Schott in partnership with several community organizations. Coun. Jeff Browaty funds one monthly bus, while a similar service runs in Elmwood East Kildonan. Good Neighbours Active Living Centre now manages the program, with added support from Rossmere’s constituency office.

On Nov. 28, MLA Tracy Schmidt and Browaty joined seniors on the shuttle to McIvor Mall, where volunteers, including students from Miles Mac, help shoppers with their bags and mobility needs. About 20 seniors use the service regularly, with room for 35.

Organizers say continued funding is needed. They hope to secure more partners, noting that such services existed before the pandemic but were never restored. They encourage local grocers to join the effort to help ensure seniors can maintain independence, social connection and reliable access to groceries.
