Uncle Vinny’s Toy Drive Marks Record Fifth Year

Uncle Vinny’s Toy Drive marked its fifth year by surpassing its goal and collecting the highest number of toys in its history. More than 1,750 toys were gathered from November 12 to December 10 at over 40 businesses across the Lower Mainland. The Salvation Army Boundless Vancouver picked up the donations on Monday for its Toy Shop, which helps families choose Christmas gifts they would not otherwise be able to afford.

Founded in 2021 in memory of Vinny Maan, the toy drive began as a way for his family to turn grief from his sudden passing in 2019 into something meaningful. After five years, a total of 8,250 toys have been donated in his name.

Pinder Saran, Vinny’s sister, said the drive brings people together and continues to honour Vinny’s love of Christmas and children. Family members also volunteered at the Toy Shop, seeing many of their donated toys on the shelves as they helped families select gifts.

A new addition this year was Uncle Vinny’s Memorial Basketball Tournament, a three on three event at Fraser Heights Secondary inspired by Vinny’s passion for the sport and his time coaching youth. Funds from registration and spectators were used to buy toys for age groups with fewer donations. The fundraiser also expanded to new cities, supporting The Salvation Army in the Okanagan and Calgary.

The Salvation Army continues to seek support to reach its goal of raising $4,600,000 in British Columbia. People can help by volunteering or donating at a Christmas Kettle or online.
