Saint John’s “Free Store” for the Community

Hundreds of people attended the free store recently hosted by the Saint John Community Coalition at Stone Church. Visitors were able to pick up clothes, toys, furniture, books, kitchen appliances, and more for free.

This is the second time the Saint John Community Coalition invited residents to browse through tables of donated goods. The first free store in December was a huge success too.

The organizers centered the event around giving people a sense of dignity while strengthening community ties. Everyone in the community was welcome to pick what they needed without the requirement for the visitors to prove they were in need. The coalition also provided free soup and bread at the event, made with donated ingredients.

The organizers believe that the event’s success highlights the need for more future events, as the demand exceeded expectations. The Saint John Community Coalition is formed by smaller groups with shared goals. The free store initiative intends to help those in need by offering free access to essentials.

The community donated several items for the free store, overwhelming the organizers and creating a space crunch. The next free store is expected to be at a bigger venue in the summer.
