Students of a Kanata high school are on a mission to save lives lost to gun violence. The student-led campaign “289 to Zero” aims to raise money and provide a safe space for vulnerable kids to develop self-confidence and life skills to succeed.
The campaign, 289 to Zero, was created to honour Quentin Dorsainvil, a former Holy Trinity High School student who was killed in a Centretown shooting last fall. The students decided to create a business and raise money to end gun violence in their community. 289 Canadians lost their lives to gun violence in 2023, and the goal of the students’ campaign is to reduce this number to zero.
Students have been creating and selling bracelets and hoodies as part of their 289 to Zero campaign. They aim to raise $5,000 and have already raised more than $2,000 since the campaign launched in November last year. By buying their products, Canadians can support the cause to help all kids live in an untroubled, violence-free world.
The students have chosen the Boys and Girls Club in Ottawa as their preferred charity, which offers children opportunities for success so that they never have to be exposed to negative environments and activities. To applaud the efforts of the students at Holy Trinity High School, the Organization for National Gang Information & Awareness (ONGIA) is donating money to further their initiative.
