A French immersion education specialist from Prince Edward Island has been recognized for her commitment to high quality teaching. Marie Anne Roy, who serves as the Elementary French Immersion Literacy Coordinator with the Department of Education and Early Years, was honoured at the Canadian Association of French Immersion Professionals conference in Banff, Alberta. She was one of two recipients nationwide to receive the Excellence in Immersion award.
Roy began her career on the Island in 1992 and will retire later this year. Guided by her belief in learning language through real experiences and cultural immersion, she organized numerous educational trips to the Magdalen Islands, giving students the chance to engage in an authentic French speaking setting. She also directed 12 bilingual musical theatre productions. These projects helped students build confidence, expand vocabulary, and strengthen fluency in both languages while discovering the value of performance and collaboration.
Robin Croucher, minister of Education and Early Years, noted that Roy represents the core values of teaching French as an additional language. Her work goes beyond instruction by nurturing an appreciation for the language and encouraging interest in the French speaking world through all her efforts.
