DIY Community Health in Ontario is a mutual aid drop-in centre that helps people overcome barriers to health and social services. The non-profit recently hosted a community barbecue on the eve of World Homeless Day.
Located on Algonquin Avenue at Birch Street North, the centre has grown from serving about 15 people a day to around 50 since opening in July. DIY Community Health is a no-barrier drop-in centre for people who may face challenges like homelessness, mental health issues, or low income.
The centre offers a living room where visitors can relax and meet with staff, a community kitchen and fridge, morning coffee and lunch, computer access, showers, a washroom, and free laundry, all with the goal of helping marginalized people reconnect with the system and get the support they need.
In Timmins, DIY Community Health recently celebrated World Homeless Day with a free barbecue featuring hamburgers and hot dogs for volunteers and clients in its parking lot on Algonquin Avenue. During the event, social worker and president Jason Sereda called for more stable funding for local social services.
