A group of women recently came together to help Yukon students experience the prom of their dreams with community-donated prom clothes, shoes, and accessories.

Riley Denneny, Kaley-lynn Anne Hewitt MacDougall, and Kristie Sereda from the Yukon Ladies Ask group on Facebook organized the initiative. They accepted donations of formal dresses, suits, lightly worn shoes, and other accessories for deserving students nominated by teachers and counsellors. The nominated students then participated in a boutique day to choose their prom outfits.

The community donated prom clothes, including jewellery, shoes, and accessories, as Lavish Beauty Bar donated time to do hair and makeup for two girls. Accessing prom attire can be challenging for many families, especially in places like the Yukon.

Denneny’s past association with the Cinderella Project, which provides free prom attire for students, inspired her to grow this initiative. Teachers and staff at local schools played a crucial role in providing the prom experience to the students in Yukon, who would have otherwise missed it.

The initiative involved schools in Whitehorse and communities from Watson Lake to Dawson. While the number of students who could pick a dress is capped for this year, the organizers hope that this event will grow in future years.
