Mission’s Greg Elford Receives Community Service Award

Greg Elford, a business owner from Mission, received the 2025 Betty Urquhart Community Service Award from the University of the Fraser Valley for his efforts in revitalizing the Hougen Block in downtown Mission and his ongoing contributions to the local community.

Elford was praised for restoring a historic building in downtown Mission and turning it into a lively, community-focused space. The Betty Urquhart Community Service Award honours those who make outstanding contributions to their communities in the Fraser Valley. It is named after Betty Urquhart, one of UFV’s first staff members, who was known for her dedication to volunteering and giving back.

The Hougen Block in downtown Mission features several local businesses, including The Penny, Pressland, and Copper Hall, with five rental suites on the second floor. The building was originally constructed in 1932 by Mission’s first dentist, Dr. Otto Hougen, and his partner, Ron Fisher. According to UFV, Elford’s project has brought new life to the heart of Mission, turning the once underused building into a lively hub for arts, business, and community gatherings. Profits from managing the property, along with matching grants, are used to support five Mission-based charities each year, helping strengthen the community even further.

Elford, who owns The Penny and works with Hope Central, a faith-based food security centre, is known for his focus on collaboration and inclusion. As a pastor, community builder, and project founder, he has united local leaders, artists, and residents around a shared vision for a more caring and resilient Mission.
