Students at Langley Christian Secondary School have turned fundraising into a friendly competition. The students of Lydia Driegen’s Business Computer Applications class at Credo Christian High School have been split into two teams of nine, each launching their own projects with the goal to raise $3,500 for Safe Families Canada.
The overall goal of the project isn’t just to determine a winner, says Driegen. For her, this is an opportunity for the students to see how they can create value in their community and gain the support of the local business community for charitable efforts. Safe Families Canada is a non-profit organization that helps find homes for children in their communities, offering an alternative to the provincial foster care system. The charity also provides other childcare support, such as volunteer babysitters for single mothers.
One team is organizing an Amazing Race-style challenge that will take place around Langley on Feb. 22, while the other team is setting up a gala dinner to take place in Yarrow on Feb. 21. Both teams are working hard to make their events a success, securing sponsorships and selling tickets to reach their fundraising goal.
Students on the gala dinner team are currently focused on ticket sales and planning out the entertainment for their gala dinner, which may include a string quartet. The Langley race event will feature eight stations where participating families must complete activities, such as puzzles, before moving to the next stop. The first team to finish will win a prize. The entry fee is $40 per vehicle, and the entire route is expected to take about three and a half hours.
One of the biggest challenges so far has been securing sponsorships, as many companies are busy and slow to respond. To help promote their events, both teams have created websites with details on how to participate and purchase tickets. For more information, click here.
