The Canadian Animal Blood Bank works towards saving dogs’ lives by providing high-quality blood products from donor dogs. On Jan 1, it launched its blood donation program for dogs in Halifax, offering all dog owners an opportunity to make their pets heroes by donating blood that could save another dog’s life.
The Canadian Animal Blood Bank collects blood from local dogs to help maintain a supply for the East Coast, says Ariana Pierre, who works with the Canadian Animal Blood Bank. With the rising demand for dog blood donations, the centre is working to find more donors. To be eligible, dogs must be:
- between one and eight years old
- weigh over 55 pounds
- be up-to-date on vaccines
- and be in good health
If a dog meets these requirements, the clinic will check its blood type and screen for tick and heartworm related diseases. Pierre explains that dogs have two main blood types: positive and negative. Negative blood, found in about 40% of dogs, can be donated to all dogs, while positive blood, which makes up 60% of donations, is also in high demand.
The donation process is simple. Dogs remain fully awake while blood is drawn from their largest vein, usually in the neck, to keep them comfortable. The entire process takes just three to five minutes.
Dogs that donate receive special perks, including a free blood product per donation for life, a donor tag, and a bandana. Pierre notes that dogs can donate blood every three months, and pet owners can register through their veterinarian or the Canadian Animal Blood Bank’s website.
