Kitchener Man Runs to Raise Money for the Homeless

Jovica Savic, from Kitchener and known online as yatziruns, recently ran the entire perimeter of the city to raise awareness and funds for people experiencing homelessness, food insecurity, and mental health challenges.

Taking his message of hope to the streets, Savic completed the 51.9-kilometre run in under eight hours, aiming to raise $25,000 for frontline organizations, including Ray of Hope in Kitchener.

Savic shared that he was inspired after once seeing a mother and child on a street corner. The child was about the same age as his own, and the encounter deeply moved him. That moment motivated him to take action and help those in need.

His heartfelt video, “Thoughts of a Refugee,” went viral online, reaching millions of viewers and inspiring thousands of messages of encouragement. His story also touched many, including Toronto runner Kim Kabin, who connected with Savic and now calls him a friend.

Together with supporters, Savic raised $7,800 for Ray of Hope, a local organization that helps people in need. CEO Tonya Verburg said the support is vital as more families struggle and the demand for food and warm clothing continues to grow.
