Inuvik’s Reading Group for Dads and Kids

A group called Delta Dads Read in Inuvik, Northwest Territories, is bringing fathers and their kids together once every month for a unique bonding experience. The group offers a supportive space for dads to connect with their kids and each other, fostering community and an avenue to discuss the challenges of parenting in a relaxed and welcoming environment. Founded by local dads, including teacher Mike Bodnar, the Saturday morning reading sessions focus on more than just children’s literacy.

Mike Bodnar is a local teacher in Inuvik and one of the founders of the new Delta Dads Read group, which meets on the first Saturday of each month and has already gathered twice. The group offers young fathers an opportunity to spend quality time with their kids in a fresh and engaging setting.

The meetings are funded by the N.W.T. Literacy Council and supported by local organizations like the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation’s food program, which provides healthy snacks and drinks for the gatherings. According to Mike Bodnar, the group is already fostering connections among fathers in ways they might not experience otherwise.

Bodnar shares that the group sparks conversations and ideas, recalling a conversation between him and another dad bonding over their kids’ love of climbing. For Bodnar, the group’s importance also lies in providing a space for dads to connect on a deeper level.

Each meeting includes a group reading session followed by free playtime in the school gym, offering a mix of learning and fun. The group also hopes to inspire other dads in the region to start similar initiatives in their communities.
