Earlier in October of 2024, a tragic and intentionally set fire swept through the townhome complex at Las Americas Villas in Monterrey Park (Calgary, Alberta), destroying three homes and damaging a fourth. One Calgary family, who lost everything in the explosion, is expressing gratitude to the community for making this holiday season unforgettable for them.
Gladys Betonio-Werbisky, her husband Greg, and their three-year-old son Tatum are now settling into a new home after their townhouse located on Laguna Way N.E. was destroyed by fire on October 5. The explosion devastated three two-storey townhomes and damaged a fourth, but fortunately, the family was away when the incident occurred.
When Gladys learned of the fire over the phone, she said it felt like the weight of the world had fallen on her shoulders, describing the experience as a terrible nightmare. Left with no possessions and facing delays with their insurance, the family initially sought refuge at a friend’s home. In response, a family member launched a GoFundMe campaign, which quickly received an outpouring of community support. Within days, donations of money, items, and encouragement began to ease the family’s burden. To date, more than $26,000 has been raised to help them rebuild their lives.
The family credits the generosity of their loved ones, friends, and co-workers from the City of Calgary and the Peter Lougheed Hospital for helping them rebuild their lives. While their insurance claims remain unresolved, they are grateful to be in a new home and together for the holidays. The community donated everything to rebuild the home, from couches to TV to coffee tables.
