The Voice of English-speaking Quebec Holiday Happy Hour brought festive spirit to the Morrin Centre on Dec. 3 in support of the 30th annual Quebec City Community Christmas Hamper Campaign (CCHC). Nearly 150 people gathered in College Hall for a warm and cheerful cinq a sept, greeting friends and neighbours and sharing good wishes for the season.

CBC Radio, a major sponsor, spoke with guests about past holiday memories, hopes for the coming year and the meaning of the hamper campaign. Many attendees noted the impressive crowd.

Music filled the hall thanks to Irish Tree, a Celtic trio featuring Mike Labonte, Frederic Drouin and Olivier Leclerc, provided through CBC Radio. Santa Claus, played by Paul Williamson, also took part. With his naturally white beard and hair, he enjoyed the gathering before preparing for hamper delivery on Dec. 20. Originally from Hamilton and a member of the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve, he is serving his third year as Santa for the campaign.

VEQ administrative assistant Maria Hoyt later confirmed that the event raised a total of $1,377.29, including raffle ticket sales and bar proceeds. The funds support the Community Christmas Hamper Campaign, which will distribute hampers to about 250 households this year. Organizers noted they are nearly halfway to their goal of $50,000 to help purchase the fresh fruit, meats, vegetables and dairy products included in each hamper. Community members are encouraged to contribute before the end of December.
