The residents of Annapolis Valley, N.S., are volunteering to help and support those affected by the wildfire and the fire crews battling the out-of-control Long Lake wildfire.

Last week, volunteers in Clarence, N.S., came together to cook and serve turkey dinners for 100 to 120 people forced from their homes by the Long Lake wildfire, which has been burning since August 13 near West Dalhousie. In the Annapolis Valley, communities continue to show their support for evacuees and the firefighters working hard to control the blaze.

Local businesses are helping as well. Kentville-based ACDirt Excavation and Construction is offering heavy equipment to clear brush and trees near homes close to the fire zone for free, reducing fuel for the wildfire. At the same time, CFB Greenwood has been hosting firefighting crews, providing space for planes to land and refuel and for crews to live and eat.

Firefighters from the Northwest Territories and Manitoba have been amazed by East Coast kindness, with locals donating food and even fishermen giving scallops for free. The support has been so generous that volunteers sometimes run out of space to store all the donations, as the community rushes to feed and care for the crews.
