95-year-old Janet Meddings has been giving back to the community by knitting and crocheting blankets. She crochets blankets and then sells them at $30 a piece, donating the money to charities.
Meddings, who turned 95 in January, spends most of her days at the Rocky Ridge Retirement Community socializing while crocheting blankets in a quest to help others. Meddings donates the money raised from selling her blankets to places like Inn From the Cold or Mustard Seed.
Meddings moved to Calgary six years ago and has made about 648 blankets. Last year, she raised over $1,600 from the sale of her blankets and donated the money to Inn from the Cold to help the vulnerable people. She has been helping people since she was 10 years old, when she started knitting socks for soldiers during the war.
Janet is passionate about helping less fortunate people and has spent a career as a social worker. She has worked with child welfare in England, worked at a jail in Fort Saskatchewan, and has worked a lot with addictions as director of family and community support services.
Medding’s colourful blankets have been bought by people from many countries, including Japan, Germany, Mexico, and the U.S. While she currently makes about 2-3 blankets per month, she hasn’t set a target for the number she will make this year. She will keep knitting and crocheting as long as she has yarn. Her helpful nature and simple view of life have helped many people around her.
Meddings is always in need of yarn. Donations can be made by contacting the Rocky Ridge Retirement Community here.
